What Causes Acne Scar?
Acne scar is basically caused by skin damage triggered by acne inflammation. The process of acne scar formation is actually related to the way the body repairs its own damaged tissues. When inflammatory acne breakouts become so severe that they start penetrating deeper skin tissue, the damage that they cause become so severe that the body will initiate a thorough repair process that involves the production of collagen.
The severity of the inflammation, its length, age, and the amount of collagen produced by the body during the repair process are factors that determine how the scar will be formed. Rolling acne scar, for instance, is formed when severe inflammatory acne afflicts the skin for a long period of time. As the skin ages, it will gradually lose its elasticity.
If the long-term inflammation afflicts the skin that starts to lose its elasticity because of age, scars will be formed on the skin. All atrophic acne scars appear as depression on the skin because during the repair process, the body produces too little collagen. Among the three types of atrophic acne scars that may appear on the skin, rolling scars are the easiest to deal with whereas ice pick scars are the most difficult due to their deep depression.
Hypertrophic scar occurs when excess scar tissue is formed at the injury site. This excess is particularly caused by the overproduction of collagen during the repair process. The tissue is so excessive that nodule of keloid, which feels like rubber when touched, will develop on the afflicted area of the skin. Hypertrophic acne scars require specific treatment that is slightly different from that for atrophic scars.
Skin Problems Triggered by Acne Scar
Both atrophic and hypertrophic scars cause discoloration on the affected skin, which can be in the form hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Another problem that can be triggered by acne scarring is redness on the skin, which is also called erythema and caused by the dilation of blood vessels near the surface of the skin.
All of these skin conditions that are triggered by acne scarring requires specific treatment that is different from that for the others.
